Who could be angry with them for that? Well, as it turned out, a lot of people. But there are still shining lights in the sea of muck, and Capcom has wisely taken a cue from those beacons and decided to give us more. The series eventually evolved and broke off into what ultimately has become a fragmented franchise rife with garbage. The 8-bit Mega Man series is considered one of the NES' best franchises, running through six games that were eaten up by the masses in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This may seem drab and boring to the ever-growing crew of hobbyists I lovingly refer to as "Nouveaux Gamers," but for the old-school, retro crowd who were weaned on the NES - arguably the finest console ever released - this is nothing but good news. And as if that's not enough, Capcom is even willing to make fun of itself and its treasured franchise, with laughably bad period box art and a Robot Master reveal - Sheep Man - that could only be considered tongue-in-cheek.įind out what we thought of Mega Man 9.
And that's totally fine, since the Mega Man games on the NES provided some of the purest gameplay experiences in history, replete with crisp 8-bit graphics and some of the most famous MIDI music ever created. Instead, it's trying to deliver something tried and true, something that's been delivered plenty of times in the past. Mega Man 10 isn't trying to break the mold and deliver something new and extraordinary. But what makes Mega Man 10 great isn't its innovation, but its lack thereof. Shatter was a mesmerizing Arkanoid-like game that too few people played. Shadow Complex openly took inspiration from gaming's past and was hugely successful. Infamous snuck up on us and showed us that new game franchises can still deliver. 2009, a year far weaker than most, still had its fair share of greatness.
Sure, wonderful games are released often enough in the wider realm of gaming. Mega Man 9 was the last game announcement to make me feel a comparable jolt of energy, the paralysis that comes with knowing full-well that a masterpiece is quickly approaching.
